The Psychology of Checklists...

Are you familiar with the sense of accomplishment you receive when checking off an item on your “To-Do” List? Of course you are, and you’re not alone! Checklists are a great way to keep track of complex projects, workloads, and routine processes. From simple To-Do lists to advanced life-threatening surgical operations, checklists are commonly used as ways to stay organized and increase efficiency.

That’s precisely why our team at Procuments utilizes the checklist-psychology in our client portal. We believe that requesting a lot of files from someone is daunting. Nobody likes to see how many files they are responsible for providing, and simply outlining all the requested files in a portal isn’t enough. Instead, allowing the clients to receive that sense of accomplishment when they upload a requested document is a subtle, yet important strategy for encouraging faster turnaround times.

Though sticky notes work well for your daily To-Do list reminders, there are a growing number of applications you can use to assist with checklists including, but not limited to, Evernote, Wunderlist, Trello, and Google Keep. I can vouch for the effectiveness of checklists myself, and honestly cannot imagine how chaotic my day would be without them in my life, I rely on them every day.

So if you’re curious, just try it out and see what you think. Before you leave your office for the day, create a checklist using any of the aforementioned apps (or a post-it note) with the top five things that absolutely NEED to get done tomorrow. I’d recommend putting the thing you look forward to doing the least first, so you can get it out of your way and look forward to the things you prefer. As new items come up, add them to the list and determine if you think it helps.

So what is your experience with checklists? Have any checklists apps you use or recommend that I didn’t include? Let me know in the comments below!
