Easy April Fool's Day Pranks for the Office

4/1/2016

April’s Fool’s Day is one of my favorite days of the year. A good office prank not only provides a good laugh but also helps improve morale (at least that’s how I try to justify them). Though I was never brave enough to
attempt any April Fool’s Day pranks while in Public Accounting (office pranks during tax season never seemed like a good idea) they’re still fun to think about and I did my fair share of office pranks after tax season.

The practical jokes I’ve outlined below all follow three criteria; they’re actually funny and they can all be done using standard office supplies. So without further ado, let’s start with the easiest and work our way to the most challenging!
The ol’ sticky-note on the mouse prank...
Setup: 30 seconds
Supplies: Sticky Note, Pen
Description: Simply stick a post-it note with a funny note or message on the bottom of a laser mouse. Make the note small enough it doesn't stick out. It's simple but effective, the mouse will be rendered useless and you'll get a good laugh.
Pro-TIP: Tape down the corners to make sure it doesn’t fall off!

Frozen Desktop Prank
Setup: 1 minute
Supplies: Coworker's computer (especially one with a lot of desktop icons).
Description: When your coworker is out of the office, take a screenshot of his or her desktop. Quickly, replace the desktop background image with your new screenshot and hide all the desktop icons (if you need help you can click HERE).

Pro-TIP: Change the mouse sensitivity and invert the mouse direction (as seen in THIS video) to make it much more difficult for your co-worker to figure out what's going on.

Email Overload Prank
Setup: At least a few days...
Supplies: Your coworkers’ support, the victim’s email address, time
Description: If you have a coworker going out of town on vacation, ESPECIALLY somewhere where email access is limited/non-existant, get a few of your colleagues to blind copy your missing coworker on
nearly EVERY EMAIL they send out. It should only take a few coworkers a few days for the amount of emails to stagger. Upon your coworker’s return they will be welcomed back with hundreds of emails, most of which are pointless to them… HILARIOUS right

Pro-TIP: If you want to make it easier for your coworker to find/delete the erroneous emails ask everyone who in on the prank to include a message or character string, such as “-||-***” or something incredibly unique and include it at the bottom of messages with white text (so it’s invisible) but will allow for easy filtering, and subsequently, deleting, later
Post-It Notes EVERYWHERE!
Setup: Several Hours!
Supplies: Post It Notes. Lots and lots of Post it Notes.
Description: We’ve all seen these pranks performed to perfection but you certainly don’t have to have any sort of artistic ability to pull off a hilarious post-it note prank. Just lots of post it notes, on everything! This is obviously best done when the co-worker is out of town to make sure you have plenty of time since it will likely take several hours (and maybe some Post-It note runs) to pull this off. .

Pro-TIP: Spelling out a funny word or drawing an image with different colored post-it notes will definitely knock this prank up a notch (as seen HERE)!
